A GREAT PLACE FOR WOMEN. If your group needs a place to meet, please know that we are happy to accomodate you! We envisioned Oasis to be a gathering place. It's used by book clubs, chat groups, church groups, social groups, and support groups. We only ask that you pass the hat to help with the electrical bill. If you would like to know more, email Consuela and ask for a copy of the guidelines or call us.
MOTHER-DAUGHTER CIRCLES (for Mothers and their middle school aged daughters).
"Getting to the heart of the matter!" At the very heart of girls’ development is the mother-daughter relationship, in all of its dimensions – strengths, challenges, longings, disappointments, comforts, and dreams. No relationship seems to compare to the mother-daughter connection in its significance to a girls’ sense of value, identity, and assurance. The purpose of the circle is to promote a healthy and sustaining bond between mothers and daughters during the transitional years from girlhood to young womanhood.
Each Circle can only accommodate 6-8 pairs of mothers & daughters.

COUNSELING
We believe that most women benefit, at one time or another in their lives, from having someone to talk to who is educated and experienced in counseling, who listens without judging, protects privacy, and who understands women's issues. And because of that, we also believe that every woman should have the opportunity to access that service, regardless of whether or not they have insurance, and based on their personal ability to pay.
Our counseling philosophy is a strengths-based approach - a collaborative helping relationship that is formed between our team members and the women we serve. This relationship may involve direct work with individuals, families, groups, and communities as well as advocacy with the purpose of empowerment and the promotion of social and economic justice. Our strengths-based approach focuses on women's inherent strengths, resources, and coping skills, who are viewed as capable of change, and are partners and active participants in the change process. Our team members are not problem solvers; the women we serve are the problem-solvers. Our team members help women to recognize, marshal, and enhance their inherent strengths and abilities, empowering them and establishing a collaborative working relationship. Our strengths-based philosophy seeks to discover the resources and abilities that the women we serve currently have, and work with them to change their futures. The past cannot be dismissed, as it provides a context for the present, but our focus is on the present and how we can help to positively affect the future.
Our counselors, Sarah & Priscilla are both MSWs and have more than 30 collective years counseling women and girls.
If you would like to know more about the counseling program, call us at 222-2747 or email Sarah or Priscilla.
SINGLE MOMS SUPPORT
Being a parent is tough enough - raising a family alone is that much tougher. The Oasis Center for Women & Girls understands and wants to help. Our Single Moms Support Groups provide a way for you to connect with other women who understand what you are going through.
The groups are open to single moms of all ages, from all backgrounds. In a safe and informal environment, the women are encouraged to share and learn from each other, to talk through difficult times or situations and to share the joys that come along. Guest speakers will address issues like self-esteem, planning for the future, financial literacy, housing, and childcare.
Babysitting is available on site for children 12 years and younger.

CONSCIOUSNESS RAISING GROUPS
In the 70s Consciousness-Raising groups played an important role in bringing women together, outside of the isolation of their home lives, to share their experiences of being women. In the groups, including right here in Tallahassee, women began to understand that what was typically viewed as "personal problems" -- like seeing women underrepresented in elected office, being exhausted from being the primary parent, feeling trapped in violent relationships, being told they weren't eligible for certain jobs or being treated in demeaning ways on the job or on the street -- were really "political problems". These pioneering women understood that the best strategy for dealing with these problems was having a safe and nurturing environment to talk to other women and to deal with them collectively.
At Oasis, we believe that even though the world has changed, there is a still significant benefit in providing a safe place for women to connect and share experiences. Therefore, we are bringing the 1970s into 2010 and starting a consciousness raising group at Oasis! Groups meet one evening or afternoon a week for 10 weeks. That first night is devoted to understanding the history of the groups, getting to know each other and making some decisions about how the group will function.
There are different groups starting and opening so if you are interested, please call!
